Caribbean Jazz Project, Latin jazz Artist
This week’s Featured Artist is a Latin jazz group whose music is a fusion of Latin jazz, Caribbean rhythm and Afro-Cuban jazz. The founding members include Vibraphonist and marimba specialist Dave Samuels, renowned Cuban saxophonist and clarinet player Paquito D’Rivera, and (pioneering) jazz steel pan artist Andy Narell. The Caribbean Jazz Project came into existence in 1995, and over the years the group has undergone changes in members twice. With the original members Samuels, D’Rivera and Narell the group made two albums, the self-titled “Caribbean Jazz Project” and “Island Stories”.
When Andy Narell and Paquito D’Revira departed the group, guitarist Steve Khan and flutist Dave Valentin joined Dave Samuels. The group released three more albums, and in 2002, landed a Grammy Awards for Best Latin Jazz album with “The Gathering”.
As the Caribbean Jazz Project continued to evolve, other musicians who have played with the group as members or collaborated with them include trumpeter and flugelhornist Diego Urcola, pianist Dario Eskenazi, bassist Oscar Stagnaro, drummer Mark Walker and percussionist Roberto Quintero.
